Tutoring for Project SPELL is not only a rewarding experience, but it’s something that’ll stay with our tutors and learners lifelong. The tutors in the program are all UCLA students, and many of them form closely-knit relationships with the employee learners, creating lasting memories and bonds each quarter in the program. Nothing can beat being able to enrich the lives of our UCLA employees.
Each quarter, we commit to 16 hours of tutoring. This doesn’t include the preparation that is required for each tutoring session. We prepare individualized lesson plans for our learners, and towards the end of the quarter, we share the lesson plans amongst one another to critique and improve our work.
The tutors have the chance to get to know one another throughout several bonding activities that are held in the beginning and throughout the duration of each quarter in Project SPELL. At the beginning of the quarter, tutors participate in a tutor retreat, and last fall, we went to the Challenge Course in Sunset Recreation. We also hold three workshops during the quarter, run by the Student Committee of Project SPELL. These workshops allow our tutors to bond but also to learn new techniques to use in their own sessions. One perk of these workshops is free lunch, provided by UCLA’s Volunteer Center. It’s always delicious!
Being a part of Project SPELL is great because it is something different. There are a multitude of tutoring and teaching opportunities at UCLA, but to be able to better the lives of our own UCLA employees is so meaningful. Join Project SPELL, and I guarantee that you will not be let down by level of satisfaction you’ll receive through this phenomenal program.
