Volunteer in Community Outreach, Conservation and Agroecology in Ecuador

July 8th, 2012

Location: Quito, Ecuador
Duration: Ongoing
First Day : Jul 8, 2012

The Golondrinas Foundation is a community outreach and conservation project located in a spectacular region of Ecuador that belongs to the greater Chocó Bioregion. This is a region that contains some of the highest levels of species diversity and endemism in the world. Our project is dedicated to the conservation of natural resources, conservation of cloud forests, the improvement of eroded soils, and environmental education in the lower Río Mira valley, between the provinces of Imbabura and Carchi. In this mountainous region, inadequate agricultural management such as burning, row planting and overgrazing, as well as high levels of water erosion have resulted in soil degradation and thus, a loss in soil productivity.
r In Ecuador, the Golondrinas project is one of the most successful deep-rooted ecological initiatives in the community. The principal objective of the Foundation is to conserve this unique forest ecosystem all the while improving the quality of life for the people in the region. The latter objective is being carried out via classes in environmental education and the introduction of appropriate agricultural and agroforestry techniques for local farmers.
r We are in serious need of volunteers to help with our environmental education program at various local schools, help in establishing sustainable farms and gardens in surrounding communities, or even other projects led by volunteer design and initiative! Everyone is welcome.
r There is no age limit, and your stay can range between a week to months on end. We love company, and would also like for you to have enough time for sightseeing in this beautiful and unique region of Ecuador.
r Our community outreach coordinator is UCLA graduate Sarah Fernández, and she would be delighted to give you more details about this volunteer opportunity by e-mail, over the phone, or in person.
