Do we have a blind spot?Bovine Cow Eye Dissection

Vision IN-School is a unique science enrichment program designed for 4th – 6th-grade students. The program curriculum initially developed by the National Eye Institute (NEI) continues to receive positive reviews from both students, teachers, and volunteers’ year-after-year.

The Center for Community Outreach and Policy, a volunteer arm of UCLA Stein Eye Institute, provide volunteer guest speakers to involve students in a lively 60 to 90-minute session covering:

• Anatomy of the eye

• Mechanics of vision

• Problems that interfere with vision

• Eye health and safety, including injury prevention

The program provides interactive learning for the young audience, with a bovine cow eye dissection demonstration. We believe that this program empowers children by giving them knowledge about how their eyes work, and providing them tangible ways to protect their sight. Eye injury is the leading cause of blindness in children in the United States.

We take active measures to ensure all volunteers are expertly trained and to have a positive impact on the children. Volunteers have a choice to participate in the presentation or dissection.  Carpooling available from the Institute upon request.
