Veteran Day Barbecue

November 11th, 2017

Location: 841 Benson Way Thousand Oaks CA 91360
Duration: Multiple Days
First Day : Nov 11, 2017
Last Day: Nov 11, 2017

Lions are changing the world one community at a time, by addressing needs at home and around the globe. We are 1.4 million men and women who believe that kindness matters. And when we work together, we can achieve bigger goals.

Veteran BBQ – Get Your Weekend Warrior On!

This is a great opportunity to show your appreciation for their service and thank them for their service in person. A veteran is one of the few jobs where they ask you to write a check that includes your all up to and including your life; to protect our families and country. No rhetoric can spin that fact.

Come Veteran Day Saturday November 11th 2017, we need your help doing what we do best. We SERVE. And in this case, also cook, barbeque, entertain and make friends; 8,000 plus Friends. It’s happening at Serenity Park Parrot Sanctuary (parrotcare.org/Parrots.html.) behind the Veteran Administration Hospital, 11301 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, 90049 in Westwood on the opposite side of the 405 freeway from UCLA. Jackie Robinson Stadium, 100 Constitution Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90095. GPS and Google Map Friendly.

A little history is in order; this is a yearly event, that is open to all veterans and their families. It is sponsored and supported by The Lockwood Animal Rescue Center (LARC). They raise the money for the event, they bring the grills, the food, some serious cooks and promote the heck out of it. www.lockwoodarc.org/events-2/ It’s the result of a ton of love and work by Dr Lorin Lindner and Matthew Simmons who also hang their hats in Frazier Park saving Wolves and other Wildlife.

I can’t speak for the total history of the event, but our experience has been wonderful and exhausting over the years. It came on our radar while assisting the Parrot Sanctuary, working with their birds. At that time, they were doing the BBQ and we came to help and they expected 400 people and 800 showed up. Funny thing – we cooked and cooked and didn’t run out of food (except potato salad and slaw). The next go round we were told to expect 1,200 and 2,000 showed. That time we kept cooking and did not run out of the potato salad, and so it went each year. Last year we were told to expect 3,000 and 5,000 was our out the door head count (we started at 8:30 am and cooked until 7:00pm). This year we are told to expect 8,000. (GULP).

Over the years, we have had LIONS from Northridge Club come out, along with Rotarians (fair is fair), School District Employees, and literally anyone who could help with the cooking and serving and smiling. DG Steven agreed to let me share this with the District with the hope that we could get some serious LIONS support this go round. NO MONEY. The food and grills and serving supplies and the entertainment and everything that costs is covered by the programs that Dr. Lindner and Matt run prior to the event. THE ASK is if you can come out and Cook, Serve, Smile, carry food, serve soda, dish out potato salad, stir pots of beans, you get the picture.

If you are looking for a cool event and geographically you can join us, we need all the help we can get. Also for those who are concerned; the food ranges from hot dogs, to hamburgers, to steaks, chicken, ribs, salmon, chops, tri-tip, pork, brisket (holy cow but I could go on – everything you could expect and a whole lot more.) They do gifts and live music and all you can eat. Wear your LIONS Proudly. (But plan to spend serious time washing your clothes afterwards – between the sauces and the soot from the grills.) It’s a blast. If you can come, please contact LION David 818-456-3586 cbedda@yahoo.com so we can count on you and have a count as well.

Time Details

We really could use the help. It will be at Serenity Park Parrot Sanctuary in Westwood near UCLA behind the Veteran Administration Hospital. see map. This is an event the Northridge Lions Club has supported for multiple years now. We show up and help. No official sponsorship but the event has grown, see the notes below, and it is definitely bigger and needs more help then what we as a club have been doing in the past. It is just across from UCLA and if your volunteers would be able to lend a hand that would be awesome.

SATURDAY November 11th 8am-7pm Take Constitution Ave to Davis Ave Turn Right (north) and follow road to end and turn Left behind Jackie Robinson Stadium and there will be people directing you to park. 50 feet in there is a tent and the bird sanctuary and a whole lot of people running around. MATT SIMMONS is the GUY’s Guy for direction but ask and someone will have something that needs done right away.

If you have any friends, other UCLA'ers, kids, wives, grandkids etc all are welcome. Cook Serve Lines all kinds of opportunities for everyone.

They show up at 8am and you can come then or later. Parking you need to tell them you are a volunteer and they will help you with where to park. If you plan to leave early, advise them so you do NOT get boxed in. Its an all day event and it gets busy pretty darn quick. Jobs are all over the place and they will put you where you are needed most and then things can change again.
Wear UCLA but be aware that after the event you will SERIOUSLY NEED TO CLEAN YOUR STUFF AFTER THE EVENT. Its that kind of thing.
