UCLA VOLUNTEER CENTER: Tutor a student...

Tutor a student in Math or English

September 8th, 2011

Students are behind in their basic skills for various life reasons: home life, bullies, stereotypes that push them down. It becomes frustrating when they get behind in their work with no one to assist them with their homework or encourage them to do better. With a commitment of as little as 2 hours a week you can make a difference in a youth’s life through the rewarding HOSTS one-on-one Academic Mentoring program at Bresee Foundation.

As a mentor, you will be paired with a student who is behind grade level in either English or Math and will take your mentee through lesson plans planned by our coordinator to address their areas of difficulty. Great for students and those with busy schedules.

What: HOSTS Mentoring
When: 2 hour per week for one school year (Aug 2010-May 2011, Monday-Friday, Center is open for students 3:30-6:30pm

* Teaching/Education: * Ability to read and follow directions. * Desire to help one student to succeed * Mentors do not necessarily need to be English or Math experts, as lesson plans are provided, the level of instruction is often basic, and the greatest need amongst kids is encouragement, which everyone can give. * Volunteers must be 16 or older.
