Sawtelle Japantown Celebration was created in 2018 to honor the anniversary of the historic L.A. City Council vote on February 25, 2015 to rename the WLA community as Sawtelle Japantown. Only four Japantowns exist in the U.S.–all in California. SJC is a 2-week celebration that celebrates the history & legacy of the Japanese community that settled pre- and post-war in WLA. The vision of SJC has grown into a celebration of Japantowns to bridge L.A.’s two Japantowns–Sawtelle and Little Tokyo–and for communities to support one another.
