Public Interest Legal Internship: Child Advocacy

The Alliance for Children’s Rights provides free legal services and advocacy to protect the rights of impoverished and abused children and youth, so that they have safe, stable homes, healthcare and the education they need to thrive. Clients include children in foster care, runaway and emancipating youth, relative and non-relative caregivers and children with educational, physical and emotional disabilities. Alliance staff includes lawyers, social workers, health care specialists, paralegals and advocates.

Interns interact with potential Alliance clients and collaborate with Alliance staff, while learning about the Los Angeles County dependency system and the resources available to those involved in the system.
Volunteers will interact directly with potential Alliance clients as our first point of contact with the client, performing intake and initial client screenings

Students will answer phone calls and do in-person assessments. We need to gather basic facts about the client and their situation to see how the Alliance can best assist them. Volunteers will work with an Alliance attorney to assess the caller’s legal needs, verify information and refer callers to appropriate resources.

Students also work under the direction of staff attorneys on the following types of tasks:

-Conducting research

-Preparing documents and correspondence

-Developing resource and educational materials for clients

*Spanish fluency preferred, but not required.

This position is unpaid, but we are happy to assist with course credit paperwork. We reimburse all volunteers for parking should they choose to drive or for public transportation costs.

Time Details

Minimum time requirement is 2 days / week for at least 4 hours / day.
Time slots can fall at any time during our office hours, 9:00am to 5:30pm Monday - Friday.
