Sharing the gift of sight – the JSEI Affiliates volunteers conduct age appropriate vision screenings at local preschools in West Los Angeles and Santa Monica. A wonderful opportunity to engage with young minds to identify fun images on a candela software for long distance testing or receive training to facilitate the handheld auto-refractor to identify possible refractor errors. Those interested in a career in vision health or working with preschool age children this is an ideal volunteer program.
The JSEI Affiliates’ mission is to support the faculty, staff and programs of the UCLA Stein Eye Institute and provide outreach to the greater Los Angeles community through patient services and vision science education.
Vision problems affect one in twenty preschoolers. Most young children do not have the communication skills to notify parents or teachers when they are not seeing properly. The goal is to set-up the child for success before starting their formal education by catching these treatable vision disorders prior. On average the Preschool Vision Screenings (PSVS) touches 1000 children annually. 10% of the children receive glasses.
Prospective volunteers must complete an online volunteer application at www.jseiaffiliates.org. Thereafter, online training certification, background and TB test are require prior to participating in the program. Volunteers must be able to provide own transportation to the preschools Tuesday – Thursday 8:30 to Noon. Carpooling available from UCLA Stein Eye Institute upon request. Minimum participation requirement is four PSVS during the months of August – December. Each week the volunteers visit a different preschool in the West Los Angeles and Santa Monica area. PSVS are provided to all SMMUSD Head Start and State preschools. Vision screening dates and times are posted on www.jseiaffiliates.org website calendar.
The PSVS runs on the heartstrings of the JSEI Affiliates volunteers. Annually they are invited to Holiday Appreciation Luncheon and a summer field trip. The David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) volunteer badge provide volunteers access to UCLA discounts.
