UCLA and the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital supports the Annual Family Picnic and Carnival hosted by PADRES Contra El Cáncer. This carnival is a full day of fun that includes live entertainment, carnival games and rides, art activities, food, and more. More than 5,000 childhood cancer patients and their families from throughout Southern California are invited to participate in this special day of celebration. This annual festival is an important day for children with cancer and their families who, as a result of rigorous treatment schedules, are often unable to come together and celebrate in a fun and safe environment.
This event is only open to Hematology and Oncology patients and their families, but UCLA volunteers have been especially invited to assist with running the different hands-on activities and booths for families. Volunteers should wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing for a day of running around and playing with children. Food and beverages, along with two t-shirts (one from the Volunteer Center and one from PADRES), will be provided at the event for all volunteers in attendance.
For more than 26 years, PADRES has improved the quality of lives for children with cancer and their families. As the only organization of its kind operating within the United States, PADRES programs, activities, and services are offered to childhood cancer patients from all ethnic and economic backgrounds. No family is ever turned away and all services are free. Learn more about other PADRES volunteer activities at their website: http://www.iamhope.org/volunteers/information.php
