MPA Watch Volunteer Training

August 21st, 2014

Duration: Multiple Days
First Day : Aug 21, 2014
Last Day: Aug 23, 2014

Do you like science AND long walks on the beach? Then you’re in luck! Our new citizen-based program, MPA Watch, trains volunteers on how to collect data while walking along the most beautiful beaches of Malibu and Palos Verdes. Become a volunteer by attending the 2-part training program which includes one classroom training and one field training session. Attendance at both sessions is mandatory.
r Volunteer Requirements
r •Volunteers must be at least 15 years old, or with a parent/guardian
r •Comfortable hiking outdoors for 1-2 hours
r •No previous experience required, but a willingness to learn is advisable; volunteers will be trained and asked to use basic field technology (binoculars, compass, digital cameras) and data sheets
r •All volunteers must give at least a 6 month commitment, with 4 surveys a month in the field
r •Volunteers must attend mandatory trainings (one classroom and one in the field)
r •Once trained, volunteer monitoring times are flexible
r What is MPA Watch?
r California’s coasts and ocean are public resources that support a variety of human uses. As a valuable tool for ecosystem protection, Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) help replenish marine life populations. In December 2010, a set of MPAs were approved in Southern California, which took effect on January 1, 2012. MPA Watch volunteers will be trained to monitor coastal and marine resource use. Data collected by our volunteers will provide important information to understand how people are using these new MPAs, and to help inform MPA management. Volunteers will conduct human activity monitoring at various locations as they walk along the beach.
