We are a non-profit education program in Los Angeles that focuses on engaging middle school students in their education by pairing them with mentors in a field they have expressed an interest in. Students are paired with mentors in various fields and have the opportunity to participate in apprenticeships where they will travel to the school or place of work of their mentor and spend time getting to learn about what it is they do. Our mission is to provide students with hands-on opportunities to learn about a field they are interested in and begin to make the connections to their education and hopefully spark an interest that will allow them to pursue their passions.
WHY: To help re-engage students in their education by given them the opportunity to learn about their dream career. As students explore the school-to-career connection, they build skills critical for academic success, gain a strong appreciation for the relevance of their education, and become motivated to work hard to achieve their dreams.
WHERE: At your workplace or place of learning! Students come to you for their apprenticeship once a week for 2 hours over the course of 8 weeks, getting real-world, hands-on experience in your career or field of study.
WHEN: Apprenticeships are 2 hours/once a week in the afternoon. (8 weeks long)
REQUIREMENTS: No experience necessary! Spark provides free training and is there with you at every step to answer questions and offer support. Every Apprentice Teacher is, however, required to pass a background check and site clearance visit at your office.
