At MOSTE, we’re out to make the world smarter, one girl at a time. We know you care about LA’s underserved communities; we do too. That’s why our mission is to give girls in these neighborhoods more than a helping hand in their quest to go to college. At MOSTE we work on the invisible barriers to higher education: lack of confidence, lack of role models who have “made it,” lack of anyone interested in their dreams of a better life. We start our smartgirl culture in MOSTE with 7th and 8th graders, who learn that we are there to validate their ambitions. By the time they enter our high school program, More MOSTE, they have visited college campuses and at least one college fair and talked with representatives from prestigious private universities. In high school, we provide SAT tutoring, college essay writing coaches, more college tours — everything they need to get into a good four-year school. And when they go off to college, we go with them. Post MOSTE monitors grades and their emotional well-being to make sure they are on track to succeed. When they graduate from schools such as Mills College, Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Bryn Mawr, UCs, Cal states, they all say pretty much the same thing: They couldn’t have done it without MOSTE.
r MOSTE (Middle School): Scholar participants in middle school are placed in group mentoring circles. Mentors and scholars participate in middle school college workshops, regional college tours, cultural programming, and a competitive ‘incentive’ scholarship program awarded at the MOSTE Culmination ceremony.
r More MOSTE (High School): MOSTE’s scholars are matched with a one-to-one mentor. Participants participate in high school college workshops, regional and long distance college tours, cultural programming, SAT tutoring, MOSTE’s volunteer service program Social Change, college essay writing boot camp, college coaching, and a competitive ‘achievement’ scholarship program.
r MOSTE seeks professional women mentors willing to act as mentors in our programs! Mentors can expect to spend approximately one Saturday per month with MOSTE scholars and in MOSTE programming.
