Math Tutor for Homeless Women

November 5th, 2011

The Downtown Women’s Center (DWC) provides healthy meals, permanent housing, and tons of other services for homeless women in Los Angeles.

I am the current math tutor at DWC. Unfortunately, I am no longer able to volunteer, and we need a new math tutor right away! This position involves teaching and leadership which is invaluable in any field you choose to go into.

As a volunteer math tutor, you will hold a regular 1-1.5 hour math session every week. It will be up to you to decide how to conduct and teach your sessions. I usually start off lecture-style, then do lots of examples on the board with the ladies until they get the hang of it. Then I give them practice problems to do individually which we go over at the end of class. I also give them “homework.” I’ve found that I need to take time to prepare each class. As you can see, this volunteer position involves a lot of responsibility, but it is very rewarding.

Most of the ladies are at arithmetic level. We have just started going over fractions. You can expect 3-7 ladies each session.

Please commit to at least 6 months. You will need to go through Orientation and Training before you can start.

If you have any questions for me, you can contact me at The other contact person, Patricia, is the Educational Services Manager at DWC who will be your main contact as the math tutor.
