Marathon Kids is a fifteen-year old, nationally recognized, exercise and nutrition program for K-5th graders. It encourages children to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle by running 26.2 miles over the course of 6 months and eating 5-a-day fruits and vegetables. Currently, in the Los Angeles school district and many other cities nationwide, physical education classes are being cut from the daily curriculum. This situation has contributed to a rise in childhood obesity in Los Angeles from 20.2% in 1999 to 26.1% in 2006.
Marathon Kids offers two free events for participating students and their families, as well as classroom packets and rewards upon completion. Last year, more than 16,000 LAUSD students completed the program and more than 100,000 participated nationwide.
This year’s Marathon Kids Kick Off Celebration is scheduled for the morning of Saturday, October 22, 2011 at UCLA Drake Track and Field Stadium: 221 Westwood Plaza, Los Angeles CA 90095.
Shifts are as follows:
6am-10am: setup and greeting
7am-11am: setup and event
8am-12pm: event and breakdown
(YOU ARE ALSO WELCOME TO STAY AND VOLUNTEER THE ENTIRE DAY!)
We ask that you volunteer for a minimum of 4 hours but we GREATLY appreciate any extra time you can give. The jobs range from hi-fiving the kids and handing out rewards to assisting with crowd control. The event itself starts at 10am, and we expect thousands of kids, parents and teachers to attend. They all run 2 laps around the track in heats of about 150 until everyone has run and received their rewards!
You could also volunteer to be a captain and lead a group of volunteers! Captains are required to meet at UCLA on the evening of Friday, October 21st for approximately 1 hour to review plans for the event. If you are bringing a group to volunteer with you, then please let me know how many you anticipate will be joining you. Please ask your friends to sign up here: http://www.marathonkids.org/volunteer.
