Vision IN-School is a unique science enrichment program designed for 5th – 8th grade students. The JSEI Affiliates curriculum, originally developed by the National Eye Institute (NEI), continues to receive positive reviews from both students and teachers, year after year.
r The Affiliates provide professional volunteer guest speakers to involve students in a lively 45 to 60 minute session covering:
r
r o Anatomy of the eye
r o Mechanics of vision
r o Problems that interfere with vision and
r o Eye health and safety, including injury prevention
r
r Presentation will cover illustrating depth perception, optical illusions, and impaired vision and provides interactive learning for the young audience, as does a dissection demonstration using a cow’s eye. We believe that this program empowers children by giving them knowledge about how their eyes work, and providing them tangible ways to protect their eyes.
r
r New volunteers will be paired with experienced program volunteers who have experience with the program curriculum. Volunteers will have the option of being a presenter or dissection demonstrator or both. Volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from the schools or we may be able to arrange carpooling from UCLA. No experience is required
