Interested in Fairtrade design? Economic solidarity? Want to help the growth of a women’s recycled design project in Quito, Ecuador?
r CENIT is a non-profit organization devoted to helping working children (especially girls) and their families overcome grinding poverty and improve their quality of lives through recreation, medical, social, and psychological services, nutrition programs, education, and vocational training.
r NADENA is the production branch of Cenit. We work to give both practical skills and empowerment training to mothers in a poor barrio of Quito. We have a recycled jewellery workshop, bag making workshop and a recycled card workshop which we are currently modernising with new machinery to increase production and modernise designs. Your working time will be flexible. Some time will be spent directly in the workshop with the women’s groups. You may be visiting potential clients, having meetings or doing design work at home.Cenit relies heavily on the help of volunteers in almost all aspects of our programs. Though we have a full time staff of Ecuadorian professionals, volunteers provide an incredible amount of support and continuity to the work being done here at Cenit.
r NADENA requires Artists/Designers and Marketing/Sales volunteers
r Creative People
r We are looking for up to two artists/designers who can not only ensure the continuing quality and design of our products but also help run the project alongside a sales and marketing volunteer.
r Especially interested in people with recycled design skills, jewellery skills (that can be transferred to recycled design) sewing skills, and printmaking skills, but we are open to other ideas if you feel you have the skills and commitment. Ability to creative think and problem solve especially useful. You will be working alongside marketing/sales volunteers to ensure the continual running of the project.
r Minimum 6 months commitment. Spanish essential as you will be working directly with women’s groups. Min age 22
r Sales and Marketing
r Responsible for ensuring and improving the productivity and efficiency within CENIT’s production workshops (recycled design and artisanal bags). Budgeting/accounting, managing inventory, purchasing materials and quality assurance are of utmost importance in providing quality products to our target audiences (local high end boutiques/hotels and tourists) while providing income to the local women who make our products. Penetrating new markets, attending local fairs and marketing are vital success in this position as CENIT relies heavily on the income produced through our production department. Must be fluent at in Spanish at an intermediate level in order to interact with local business owners, customers and CENIT’s production staff. Minimum 6 month commitment. You will be working alongside design volunteers to run the workshops. Min age 22
r We don’t charge to volunteer at Cenit. We can’t provide housing but we can help you find cheap housing. (Approx. $150-$200 per month). There is an optional one-off $75 fee to cover the cost of lunch whilst volunteering at the project or there are low cost local restaurants in the barrio (often a better option for vegetarians).
r Good Spanish needed as you will be in a variety of situations with mainly non-English speakers. Min 6 month commitment to ensure continuity in the project(If you have a specialised skill that you think may be of use for a shorter time you are still welcome to get in touch with us.) Min age 22+. No max age limit-the more experience the better!
