PUENTE’s mission is stated in its name. Puente is also the Spanish word for bridge. Since 1985, PUENTE has been offering a bridge to opportunity by enabling children to develop a lifelong love of learning, helping parents succeed in their role as their children’s first and most important teachers, supporting youth as they move toward high school graduation and beyond, and assisting adults in need of English-language fluency and modern workforce skills.
Program Description: Volunteers from PUENTE Learning Center and Target are building a state of the art new playground! The project is in partnership with KaBOOM!, the national nonprofit dedicated to giving kids the childhood they deserve by bringing play to those who need it most, and generously funded by TARGET. The playground will be built in ONE DAY with the help of 200 volunteers!
Volunteer Role & Responsibilities: No special skills necessary, all abilities needed and accommodated!
Must be at least 18 years of age to build.
Must be able to work from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Food, drinks and snacks will be provided.
Children’s activities are planned for ages 5 and above, so bring your kids!
Build Day is rain or shine.
No parking will be available; we encourage public transportation or UBER/LYFT.”
Time Commitment: 8am to 3pm
Requirements: Volunteers do not wear any identifying organization/branded apparel – this goes for colleges and universities as well
Businesses who have donated do not promote their business through banners, etc.
The playground build will happen rain or shine. Please come dressed for the weather in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty or a bit of paint/stain on. Also closed-toe shoes are required; sneakers or work boots that you don’t mind getting dirty are advisable.
Benefits: They will be part of a historic transformation in the Boyle Heights community! They will also have the opportunity to mingle with non-profit leaders and government officials for the ribbon cutting ceremony.
