GSF Spring Program Intern Position

The Garden School Foundation (GSF) is looking for interns to join us for the winter/spring semester. The ideal candidate has a desire to gain experience in garden education and urban agriculture, a passion for advocacy and community engagement. and loves to get their hands dirty with the rewarding garden work that keeps our living laboratories beautiful.

r As a Garden School Foundation intern you will have the chance to:
r
r – Gain hands-on experience in providing Garden-based education to underserved youth through our Seed-to-Table program.
r
r – Learn about organic gardening in an urban setting which includes: fruit tree care, integrated pest management practices, seed starting, plant propagation, crop rotating and of course, various composting techniques.
r
r – Meet and work with leaders in the Southern California urban agriculture and the garden-based education movement.
r
r – Work closely with a diverse group of adults and children in an outdoor, garden setting
r
r As an intern, your responsibilities will include:
r
r – Assisting Garden Coordinators during cooking and gardening classes to provide our students with the best in garden-based education.
r
r – Working closely with our garden staff to complete garden projects that enhance learning opportunities.
r
r – Assisting in the care of our beautiful and functional garden classrooms, greenhouse and themed garden spaces.
r
r – Potentially designing and completing a project of your choosing whether that’s running an after-school art club or planting in a freshly built hugelkulture.
r
r – For interested candidates: writing blog posts about your experiences in the garden or with the students as a way to chronicle your time and share what you’re passionate about with our social media community.
r
r An ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
r
r – Experience with children in an educational setting.
r
r – A strong desire to gain experience in organic gardening/agriculture.
r
r – A strong interest in food, gardening, education, and community building.
r
r – The ability to take initiative and work well independently, and also as part of a team.
r
r – Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
r
r – Positive, can-do attitude and willingness to work outside.
r
r – Be comfortable working with people of all ages and backgrounds.
r
r – Spanish language skills preferred.
r
r Interns will work 2 days a week from 8am to 3:00pm (depending on site schedule) plus one Saturday per month from 8:00am to 3:00 pm. Internships are unpaid; however, we are happy to arrange academic credit with your school or university in exchange for your work with GSF.
r

Time Details

Interns will work 8am-3pm twice a week and one Saturday every month 8am-3pm.
