The Children’s Law Center of Los Angeles is recruiting volunteers to serve as education rights holders for abused and neglected children in the dependency system. Education rights holders are responsible adults who are temporarily appointed to represent a child whose parents’ rights have been limited by the court in all matters relating to the child’s education.
Education rights holders engage in a variety of activities, from ensuring records are transferred from one school to another in a timely fashion, requesting a student be assessed for special education services, approving or rejecting Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with special educational needs, and speaking on the student’s behalf in disciplinary hearings.
Volunteers participate in a one-day training lasting around 5 hours. The training covers all the laws relevant to foster care, education, and serving as an education rights holder.
