If you care about kids and want to help them succeed in life, the Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center may be the place for you. Homework is the main thing at our nonprofit youth center in South Los Angeles. Kids come in (picked up at school in our van), grab their snacks and head straight to the computer lab where staff and volunteers help them complete their homework and their i-Ready.com online tutorials in language arts and math.
We are a college readiness program for students in grades 3-12. Along with homework and tutoring, we have world languages, performing and visual arts (percussions, arts and crafts), STEM classes (robotics, engineering, animation, etc.), life skills discussion groups, and service learning via our Youth and Junior Councils. Monthly College and Career Days, SAT-prep, job training workshops, field trips and more also help enrich the lives of everyone involved.
All of the above and more are offered in our CollegeTrek Afterschool Program and Summer Fun Camp. We are always looking for new activities and new volunteers, interns and partners to provide a wealth of exposure and instruction for our youth. We believe in higher expectations and higher education for inner city youth and look a great deal to college students and faculty to help us achieve our program outcomes.
Have a project for one day or more that you’d like to share with some great kids? Like to focus on one area like homework or a STEM class for a semester or year-round? Want to play basketball or ping pong with the kids and show them a few tips? Like to read books and want to help instill a love for reading in a child? Want to help a teen write an A+ essay? Like chaperoning field trips or working in the office helping us work smarter in the 21st century? Like fundraising or event planning? We’re open to discuss a world of opportunities for our kids and center.
The Wooten Center is known for our family environment. We have lots of fun daily learning new things and making new friends. We are housed in five storefront buildings at 91st and Western. We have a computer lab with iMacs, a library, family room, teen room, parent room, tutoring building, a full basketball court, vegetable and fruit garden and more.
Hope to meet you and introduce you to our students and staff soon. Must love children!
Our programs run year-round as follows:
* CollegeTrek Afterschool Program (Aug-Jun) -- Mon-Fri, 2-6pm
* Summer Fun Camp (Jun-Jul) -- Mon-Fri, 8am-6pm
