Community for Change Mentorship Program

March 20th, 2018

Location: Los Angeles 90043
Duration: Ongoing
First Day : Mar 20, 2018

Volunteers of America Los Angeles is a non-profit human services organization committed to serving people in need, strengthening families, and building communities.  At VOALA, we see the potential in all people to rewrite the story they are living and build skills that will allow them to face challenges with positivity and resilience. Although the people we serve face extreme obstacles and have doubts about their future and the ability to improve it, they all have exceptional strength and potential. It’s our job to make sure that potential is realized. The specific program I am a part of is Community for Change Mentorship Program. Our program aims to pair caring adults with either children who have been sexually exploited or children who are at-risk of being exploited to improve positive social development and decrease the likelihood of these children returning to the streets. The Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) refers to a range of crimes and activities involving the sexual abuse or exploitation of a child for the financial benefit of any person or in exchange for anything of value given or received by any person. Examples of crimes and acts that constitute CSEC include: child sex trafficking, child sex tourism involving commercial sexual activity, the commercial production of child pornography and the online transmission of live video of a child engaged in sexual activity in exchange for anything of value. We are currently seeking mentors who are passionate about making a difference in the community and dedicating time to one of these youth. We are asking all of our mentors for a year commitment, spending 4-8 hours a month with their mentee. Initial training and follow-up training will also be necessary to fully prepare mentors for working with this population. The application process consists of a written application, interview, reference check, background check and orientation.
