ABOUT COMMON THREADS
r Common Threads is a national nonprofit organization that is committed to educating communities about culturally relevant, healthy food choices through hands-on experiences.
r Common Threads teaches kids, parents and teachers to be life-ready through cooking know-how. Ninety-five percent of participants are in free or reduced lunch programs at their respective schools. It is in these underserved communities where Common Threads is focusing their efforts.
r TAKING A STAND AGAINST AN EPIDEMIC
r Dedicated to taking a major stand against childhood obesity, Common Threads empowers children and adults with fundamental cooking skills and nutritional education through curriculum based programs that improve their relationship with food.
r PROGRAM REACH
r Currently offering programs in 114 schools in 5 cities (Miami, Chicago, Washington, D.C., East Palo Alto and Los Angeles).
r MAKING HEALTHY BEHAVIOR CHANGES SUSTAINABLE
r Common Threads programs meet kids where they need us—right where they live, learn and play. Programs focus on building a school-wide culture of health– helping to make healthy behavior changes sustainable. Students’ experiences go beyond the traditional classroom setting as they learn realistic ways to make healthy choices within their environments.
Volunteers will be utilized primarily in after-school programs. Typically program times run 1x a week for 3 hours, 10 weeks per semester. Example time 2:30-5:30 pm.
