The Academy of Science & Engineering, a STEM pathways charter high school, alongside the BruinCorps VISTA program on site is seeking long term volunteers to be college mentors and assist their first senior class during the college application season. We work with low-income, high achieving students who are on the path to pursuing higher education.
College mentors will help students with filling out college and financial aid applications (UC, CSU, Common App; FAFSA), brainstorming/editing personal statement essays, and answering any college-related questions.
We are also looking for college mentors who will play a vital role with parents during Senior Conferences as a Spanish translator.
While help with college applications and Senior Conferences will be within the mentor’s main role, there are other ways to support ASE given the mentor’s experience, knowledge and skill set:
-Facilitate a College Thursday workshop on a given topic (college, career, study skills, etc.)
-Participate in ASE’s Career Day
-Chaperone a college visit
-Bachelors Degree or in the process of completing your degree
-Preferably bilingual – Spanish language
-Reliable transportation to get to school site
-Negative TB test
Please email Chanel Labasan with your interest and inquiries at email@example.com
A time commitment of at least once per week and a three-month commitment is highly appreciated but we are open to accommodate schedules.
If you are available for Spanish translation for Senior Conferences, you will need to commit to the following dates and times:
-September 28-November 19 from 3:15-5pm
All other volunteer hours will occur between the hours of 12:30-5pm, with the most work with students occurring during the lunch, advisory and after school periods.
