PALS Programs is an organization that provides a place for young adults with Down syndrome and their peers to have fun, grow as individuals, and build transformative friendships. PALS Programs puts on a number of events all year throughout the country including week long camps on college campuses (Camp PALS) and day or weekend events (PALS Adventures). During all PALS events participants are paired one-to-one with a peer counselor throughout the duration of the event. Check out more about PALS here: http://www.palsprograms.org/
PALS hosts an annual summer event, Camp PALS, in various cities throughout the country. Camp PALS is a week-long overnight camp experience for individuals with Down syndrome where they are paired one-on-one with a peer counselor on a college campus. Locations for the 2015 camps include San Francisco, Georgetown, Philadelphia, Princeton, Columbus, Chicago, Poconos, and Maine. We also host day- or weekend-long PALS Adventures throughout the year in locations where many of our campers live.
My friend, Meaghan O’Day, and I are hoping to bring Camp PALS to southern California. We believe there is a large community of children and young adults with Down syndrome in Los Angeles who would love to experience Camp PALS.
Currently, we need a solid local volunteer base to create our one-to-one counselor to camper pairs and for staffing to make the camp possible! We are looking for individuals who are fun, awesome, and interested in working with individuals with Down syndrome. If you would potentially be interested in this opportunity please take a few minutes to fill out our survey (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1-Ug_LJJF1__Wndwve1E9kvEl7mbxlaAjIhdYVgl3X30/viewform) and let us know what you think! Answers to the survey will help give us an estimate of how many potential volunteers we’ll have in the area, which we can then pass along to the PALS board who can then officially approve the camp for 2016.
Thank you in advance for your help in our endeavor to make Camp PALS Los Angeles happen in summer 2016! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Also, if you know of any families who would love to send their kids to Camp PALS, please have them email me as well!
