Camp Counselor

April 18th, 2012

We are looking for camp counselors for our week long camps taking place from June 11 thru August 17. The hours are from 8:00 to 4:00.

We offer 3 separate camps Girls Get Real (8-12 yrs), Boys Only (8-12 yrs) and Commons Kids (5-7 yrs). All campers meet at The ULC Family Commons in Santa Monica and then rotate in and out of the center, the beach, Palisades Park, the Promenade and the Santa Monica Pier. Campers participate in activities inside and outdoors, including Marital Arts, Yoga, Crafting, Scavenger Hunts and more.

Our camps are very unique. All of our camps offer a wide variety of fun activities customized for the developmental needs of each age group. We incorporate research about youth’s social and emotional growth. From the perspective of the children, the camps are entirely about having a good time, but we’ve actually planned the curriculum of each camp very carefully to be sure that children are at the same time building important life skills geared toward their particular stage of development.

For instance, with the girls we talk about things like friendship and bullying, body image, healthy eating and exercise, and the effects media has on how they think about themselves and their lives. We do a lot less talking with the boys, but the activities are designed to help them start thinking about who they are and who they want to be and to help them learn how to express their energy in new ways. With the youngest group, we set up role-playing scenarios that give them a chance to imaginatively think through what it’s like to be in different kinds of situations. This helps them develop social and emotional skills like cooperation and impulse control, and it also builds cognitive skills like problem-solving and abstract thinking.

We are looking for motivated students who love kids and have a lot of energy. The ideal candidate will exhibit the following attributes:
positive attitude, professional demeanor, patience, punctuality assertiveness and should be able to serve as positive role models for youths.
Anyone interested in psychology or education will benefit from this job. This is recommended but not required. This program will be especially valuable for those interested in community development as well. A background in working with children or mentoring is desired. Must provide your own transportation to and from Santa Monica.
