All that is required of a volunteer is that they enjoy a day at the beach inspiring youth who rarely get an opportunity to enjoy the beach.
Some volunteers teach surfing, others help us set up and take down our tents each Sunday. Other volunteers serve or pick up lunch for the youth and the other volunteers. Volunteers also help out with beach activities for the youth.
Volunteers receive community service hours, free breakfast and lunch, and the knowledge that their efforts have impacted our youth in a positive and life-changing manner.
Boarding House Mentors is an organization dedicated to changing at-risk youth’s lives through surfing.
Boarding House Mentors (BHM) is a 501c3 non-profit, volunteer youth surfing organization established in 2002 to transform the lives of under-served youth through participation in surfing; to fulfill this mission, BHM creates a safe and supportive youth and mentor community environment, inspiring among the youth, positive self-image, confidence, healthy lifestyles, and encouraging respect for the community and ocean environment.
We provide a supportive surf community where the youth can development physical and mental skills necessary to learn a new sport. We hope that we can inspire the youth to overcome challenges in the water that will help them master life’s challenges out of the water. BHM has been inviting under-served youth mentor programs and their youth participants to Will Rogers Beach ever since that first day and we continue to seek out new opportunities to expand our community to more youth in the Greater Los Angeles area.
