Become a Community Leader

March 26th, 2012

L.A. Works’ leadership program builds volunteer community leaders to address social issues, promote volunteerism and community impact and offer Los Angeles unique and engaging opportunities to work together in improving and developing our city. Our services support programs centered around youth/teen education and recreation, meal service and emergency food support, care and support at women’s shelters, support services for people with disabilities, environmental conservation and animal care.

Program/Training: All of our volunteer leaders are thoroughly trained and provided with tools and resources to become confident and effective community leaders. Leaders learn the roles, responsibilities and opportunities available in expanding the reach of volunteerism in Los Angeles. Trainings are held monthly. If you cannot attend the training date below, you can search for other upcoming dates by clicking on the button to the bottom right of the page.

Roles & Responsibilities:

-Project Leadership: Lead volunteers at a community project every month or at one-time service projects
-Event Captains: Lead event logistics and management for days of service
-Emergency Preparedness Program: Plan for the role that spontaneous volunteers will play in responding to disasters. >>Learn more.
-Community Ambassador: Be a spokesperson for L.A. Works

Time Commitment: Depending on the leadership roles, the time and energy involved varies. Volunteer Leaders may commit to leading a project weekly, monthly or quarterly. Some roles may require a more sporadic commitment if it’s project-based or for a specific event.

-Skills or Requirements: Volunteer Leaders are not required to have any special credentials or hard skills to take on a leadership role, though our leaders do demonstrate invaluable characteristics that make them successful including being passionate, pro-active, reliable and communicative. Having previous leadership experience is a plus.
**Anyone interested in Project Leadership should attend at least 3 of our community calendar projects. You can do this before or after you attend the training.

Benefits: Volunteer Leaders gain experience in program development, communication, volunteer management and event planning which are all valuable skills that can enhance your resume. Volunteer Leaders get to network with a variety of individuals, nonprofits and corporations.

Interested individuals MUST sign up through the L.A. Works website.
