You can make a difference in the life of a high school student from an under-served Los Angeles neighborhood who is working hard to graduate and be the first in their family to go to college.
We are looking for caring and committed people to spend one to two hours a week online with some remarkable kids so that they improve their grades and have a chance to reach their full potential. One semester of online tutoring has proven to advance a student by one full letter grade and affects their lives immeasurably.
Besides empowering our next generation of young adults, online tutoring is a rewarding experience. It is a wonderful way to give back to and strengthen our community. Being a tutor is also great for college students who are able to relate to teenagers and understand their needs on many levels—plus it is a great addition to their resumes.
VOALA Upward Bound programs serve more than 500 students each year. Over the years, we have helped thousands of teenagers make it to college. This is especially noteworthy since the kids we serve attend overcrowded inner-city schools with high dropout rates, low academic performance, and less emphasis on college attainment.
Online tutoring happens on a computer via the Internet and Skype. Thanks to these and other innovations, tutoring has become a convenient and effective way to make a real difference in a kid’s life.
