BEAM is an outreach science and engineering organization here at UCLA where undergraduate and graduate students from all majors are welcomed to join and become volunteers! Every week, our volunteers go to a specific school site where they teach and guide underprivileged elementary students through exciting engineering and science experiments. Some of our past experiments include launching stomp rockets, designing roller coasters, and making ice cream with the kids.
An info session for students interested in joining BEAM is held at the beginning of each quarter. Afterwards we have one weekly on-campus planning session where volunteers go over the week’s experiment and several off-campus volunteer days where volunteers attend at a day that best accommodates his or her schedule. BEAM is an excellent opportunity to become a mentor to elementary students and engage in them interest in math, engineering, and science.
