Volunteer Appreciation Week 2016

March 21st, 2016

National Volunteer Week took place during Week 3 of Spring quarter – April 10-16, 2016. Once again, the Volunteer Center and the Fellows hosted Volunteer Appreciation Week at UCLA to celebrate and recognize the people, organizations, and community service efforts that are making a difference in communities across Greater Los Angeles. The narrative of giving back is a part of UCLA’s identity and what it means to be a True Bruin. Students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni contribute countless hours each year to volunteer projects taking place in local communities. From helping the homeless to planting community gardens, the myriad of ways that Bruins make a difference is as diverse as the backgrounds of the volunteers themselves.

Full Schedule of Events

Sunday, April 10 | One Bus, One Cause – Second Street Elementary
To kick off Volunteer Appreciation Week, the Center hosted a One Bus, One Cause project at Second Street Elementary School. During this project, volunteers completed painting projects to beautify the school. Second Street Elementary School, founded in 1865, is a public elementary school in Boyle Heights serving 700+ students in Pre-K through 6th grade. Second Street was also a featured site for UCLA Volunteer Day 2015, so the One Bus, One Cause project represented a great new partnership with the school.

Bruin Plaza
Monday, April 11 | Bruin Plaza Outreach
The Volunteer Center took over Bruin Plaza on Monday, April 11 for a celebration of service in honor of Volunteer Appreciation Week! Popcorn, cookies, and prizes were handed out to thank volunteers for their dedication and hard work during the 2015-2016 school year. In addition, volunteers were invited to place a pin on a map intended to show the geographic reach of UCLA’s service programs. The Center’s staff was joined by the Fellows, the Student Committee of Project SPELL, Social Media and Marketing Interns, and representatives from the Community Programs Office and the Community Service Commission.

Monday, April 11 | Jackie Robinson Day at Veterans Administration West LA Campus
Service comes in many forms, and Volunteer Appreciation Week is another opportunity to thank the men and women who have dedicated their lives to serving the country. Several Bruin volunteers assisted with Jackie Robinson Day festivities at UCLA Baseball’s Jackie Robinson Stadium on the West LA VA campus. The event provided a special opportunity for veterans to meet the Bruin baseball team and coaches, take batting practice, and play catch on the field, as well as enjoy an afternoon BBQ at the ballpark. UCLA’s legendary alumnus, Jackie Robinson, not only changed the game of baseball, but also served the country for three years in the U.S. Army.

Tuesday, April 12 | Service Showcase at Pauley Pavilion Club
On April 12, the Volunteer Center Fellows hosted a networking event for service-focused student organizations, volunteer leaders, and those interested in learning more about service at UCLA. During the event, student leaders shared their group’s mission and various accomplishments while interacting with other students, volunteers, and administrators.

Wednesday, April 13 | Three Pillars, One University at Carnesale Commons
To expose students with special needs to cutting edge research, the Volunteer Center Fellows created a quarterly event called Three Pillars, One University, which provides students from Pathway at UCLA Extension and athletes from Special Olympics at UCLA the chance to attend a professor research symposium. On Wednesday, April 13, attendees gathered in Carnesale Commons to learn about the work of UCLA faculty members and students in the areas of Arts & Humanities.

Thursday, April 14 | Student Appreciation Picnic at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center
On Thursday, April 14, the Center and Fellows celebrated student leaders and those who actively participated in campus service organizations with a fun picnic on the lawn of Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The picnic supported My Friend’s Place, a center for homeless youth in Hollywood.
