United Kingdom: Team UC for British 10K
Lawrence Bailey is a 3rd year Political Science major from the UK studying full-time at UCLA. This summer, he and three other UCLA students and alumni ran in the British 10K to raise money for scholarships to be awarded to UCLA students studying abroad in England. Comprising of students and alumni, Team UC runs in the 10K every year and includes runners from each university in the UC system. This year’s team had 27 runners from 8 universities with graduation years ranging from 1987 to 2019. The UC running group provides an opportunity for UC students and alumni in the UK to stay connected with their respective UC community and raise money for other UC students who wish to study abroad in England.
Proceeds from the team’s fundraising go directly to the University of California Trust (UK), which seeks to advance the public image of the University of California in Europe and to support UC students and alumni who live there. A significant focus of the UC Trust (UK) is to support the 1,400 UC students who travel to the UK every year for study abroad programs.
When asked why he wanted to participate in the run and become a member of Team UC, Lawrence responded by saying that he wants to encourage others to study abroad in his country. “I want other students to be able to study abroad in my home the same way I am fortunate enough to do so in theirs,” says Lawrence. “I think it’s important to work in favour of globalization and give students a global education. I have benefitted from my study abroad experience and participate in the fundraising effort to help others reach this goal if they choose to study abroad in the UK..” He acknowledges the importance of paying it forward, and describes the scholarships offered as being the only way study abroad programs are feasible for students with fewer financial resources, something he notes as being particularly important for a public university like UCLA.
Lawrence found that at the moment he crossed the finish line, he felt as if all of his work had paid off. The race proved to be a worthwhile physical challenge and the cause provided a worthy goal to achieve. Knowing the difficulty of running a 10K, Lawrence trained for months and ran with others on Team UC. What he didn’t expect, however, was the connections he would make with fellow Bruins and UC alumni. His experience was a positive one, and he intends to run in more races with the friends he’s made on his team. He hopes to continue to raise money with them and give back to the UC Trust (UK). “Without a doubt,” he says, “I am going to run in the British 10K again next summer.”
Lawrence loves the relationships he’s built through the UC Running Group and recommends that any UCLA Alumni in the UK unite through the “UCLA Alumni UK Network” on Facebook. In addition to the running group, the alumni network provides the opportunity for Bruins to stay connected and collaboratively support their alma mater.
