Since the start of the New Year, over 300 UCLA volunteers have contributed in excess of 1,500 hours of community service through One Bus, One Cause service projects. This on-going volunteer opportunity takes a busload of Bruins to perform service projects while learning more about that community partner’s volunteer needs. The Volunteer Center completed seven One Bus, One Cause projects in winter quarter alone, and the schedule of spring service projects will be announced soon to sites such as Nora Sterry Elementary School, UCLA Lab School, Emerson Middle School, Union Rescue Mission, and Star Eco Station.
During the Winter Quarter, Volunteer Center Fellows completed a successful tabling outreach event in Bruin Plaza on February 7th to let Bruins know about service opportunities while creating Valentine’s cards to donate to the local senior center. Non-profit Networking Night on February 12th was a collaborative event between the Volunteer Center, Community Service Commission, Office of Residential Life and Career Center. Students were introduced to non-profit and public sector organizations looking to hire Bruins.
Three Pillars, One University took place on February 26th. The latest installment of this event series provided students with developmental disabilities access to a hands-on research experience themed “All Hands on Deck,” where Pathway program students were invited to interact with UCLA faculty members and to hear presentations on a wide variety of academic subjects.
