Teach Vision Health To Elementary School Young Scholars
Opportunity Description
Vision IN-School is a unique science enrichment program designed for 4th - 6th-grade students. The program curriculum initially developed by the National Eye Institute (NEI) continues to receive positive reviews from students, teachers, and volunteers’ year-after-year.
The UCLA Stein Eye Institute - Center for Community Outreach and Policy provides volunteer guest speakers to involve students in a lively 60 to 90-minute session covering:
- Anatomy of the eye
- Mechanics of vision
- Problems that interfere with vision
- Eye health and safety, including injury prevention
The program provides interactive learning with a bovine cow eye dissection demonstration for the young audience. We believe that this program empowers children by knowing how their eyes work and providing them with tangible ways to protect their sight. Eye injury is the leading cause of blindness in children in the United States.
We take active measures to ensure all volunteers are expertly trained and positively impact the children. Volunteers have a choice to participate in the presentation or dissection. Volunteers must provide their transportation to and from the schools. Carpooling is available from the Institute upon request.
