Stop the Hate Youth Leaders Internship Summary: From March 2020 to December 2021, 10,905 hate incidents
against Asian Americans were reported to Stop AAPI Hate. This is almost 11,000 Asian Americans
experiencing violence mainly due to their cultural background and appearances. As hate crimes are
underreported, it is likely that numerous other incidences aren’t being reported. SIPA created the Youth Leaders
Internship to address Anti-Asian hate and violence and learn how youth can be part of the solution. This is a 6-
month program where youth gain the necessary skills, tools, and knowledge to keep their communities safe. We
will foster young people to be ambassadors and leaders for their communities and engage them in critical racial,
restorative justice, and healing conversations.
Interns will attend trainings, workshops, and meetings to explore topics such as how to be safe as a bystander,
what does community healing look like, and different methods of advocacy. They will then be responsible for
hosting their own presentations to share what they’ve learned. Throughout the 6 months, they will also be
preparing for our youth-led conference at the end of April. This internship will be hybrid, most meetings will be
held virtually but there will be some in-person commitments as well.
Through SIPA’s Youth Leaders Internship, we hope youth will create networks for solidarity with other cultural
backgrounds to begin the work of dismantling white supremacy and its seeds in their communities. With an
intersectional lens on our program, we hope the Youth Leaders Internship creates a space of healing, empathy,
and growth for youth.
