Opportunity Description
I am on the board of the Friends of Westwood Library, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose sole purpose is raising money for additional book-purchases, supplies, and program-offerings at the Westwood Branch Library, which is located at 1246 Glendon, just south of Wilshire. Our biggest recent undertaking is sponsoring monthly concerts in the library. These concerts generally take place on the second Saturday of most months from 3:00-4:00 p.m. and attract audiences of 75 (and often more) people. We are seeking help with two tasks, each lasting about an hour.
Task One: set up the concerts. Clear the area to be used by musicians and audience by (a) moving out of the way five large reading tables, the 20 wooden chairs used with the tables, and four large armchairs, (b) unstacking 40-60 folding chairs from rolling racks, (c) setting out all the chairs in neatly spaced rows, and (d) laying various papers (programs, flyers, surveys, envelopes) on each chair. This task takes about an hour and needs to be completed by 12:00 noon; volunteers could arrive when they liked after the library’s 9:30 a.m. opening. Probably two volunteers would suffice; more volunteers would considerably lighten the load, as lifting each table and armchair requires two people.
Task Two: close down the concerts. Return the library to its original condition for usual use by (a) replacing the five reading tables, 20 wooden chairs, and four armchairs, (b) restacking the 40-60 folding chairs on their rolling racks, and (c) collecting any discarded papers. Concerts end about 4:00 p.m., and the task would take about an hour. The library closes at 5:30 p.m. Again, two volunteers would suffice, but more would reduce the work-load. The concerts are free to the public, so volunteers would of course be welcome to arrive early and attend if they liked.
If the availability of volunteers is limited, their help would be preferred for Task Two, as the library’s 5:30 p.m. closing is a hard deadline and thus permits no more than 90 minutes for the task, unlike the flexible timing of Task One.
Though these tasks are simple manual labor, they offer an opportunity of serving a large local audience and, if the volunteers wish, of hearing first-class musicians. Any help UCLA students would be able and willing to provide would be of major assistance in running what has become the Westwood Library’s best-attended series of programs. We appreciate your time in considering our request and, in any event, are pleased to see UCLA students so signally involving themselves in their community as to justify a web-site for their efforts. Thank you!
