California – Los Angeles: Amigos de UCLA
Miguel Sanchez is going into his fourth year at UCLA as a Sociology major and Education minor. In addition to studying, Miguel spends his time volunteering for one of the student organizations under the Community Service Commission, Amigos de UCLA (Amigos). Amigos is a one-on-one tutoring and mentoring program that works with elementary and middle school students in the Arlington Heights community in Mid Los Angeles. Amigos de UCLA is the longest running tutorial organization under UCLA’s Community Service Commission. Tutors from Amigos, including Miguel, travel to Arlington Heights once a week for tutoring sessions. This summer has been the organization’s third summer holding a weekly day camp for elementary students at a local park in the community they serve during the school year.
Miguel joined Amigos de UCLA during Winter Quarter of his first year as a Bruin and has continued to participate in the program ever since. When asked why he became so involved, Miguel said, “I joined because I was looking for a way to get more involved and the thought of working with kids sounded like a lot of fun. The relationships I have made with the students, volunteers, and directors in the program kept me coming back.” Now, Miguel is the Co-Executive Director of the organization and is always looking for ways to improve and expand the project, including offering service over the summer.
A typical day at site this summer begins with time for free play. This generally involved outdoor activities such as soccer, baseball, jump rope, or tag in order to get the students excited about the time they have with their tutors and to encourage healthy, active living. Amigos also provides nutritional lunches for service recipients, followed by a weekly educational lesson and activity. The day ends with snacks and final reflection time. When asked about his time this summer, Miguel said “I really enjoy the conversations and interactions I have with our little Amigos.” Miguel is excited about holding site over the summer not only to get to know the group of kids they work with even better, but also to continue fostering an environment of learning during summer vacation when students could otherwise fall behind.
UCLA students can get involved with Amigos de UCLA throughout the school year by coming to one of three weekly site visits. Students can apply to the program every quarter and choose the day of site that best fits their schedule. To receive an application or gain further information about the program, students can contact Amigos at email@example.com.
