A Greener Future with the Volunteer Center

The UCLA Volunteer Center is committed to a sustainable future. This is evident through the Volunteer Center’s planning of environmentally themed service projects, and by the implementation of office procedures that comply with university-wide sustainability protocols. Working in partnership with UCLA’s central Sustainability Committee, community, and campus groups, the Volunteer Center maintains a constant awareness of current trends and best practices for environmental sustainability.

Principles of the Volunteer Center’s Sustainability Policy:

Alternative Travel

  • Employees are encouraged to use alternative transportation (public transportation, carpooling, cycling, and walking) methods when traveling to work, meetings, and events
  • When available, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) or Biodiesel buses are used to transport volunteers to service projects

Responsible Purchases

  • The Center purchases Forest Stewardship Council certified paper, which includes 100% recycled or post-consumer paper
  • Large-scale publications are contracted to vendors who print using vegetable and soy based inks along with the least offensive solvents
  • Energy Star certified office technology (computers, screens, and printers) is standard for equipment purchases

Green Office and Waste Reduction

  • Recycle bins are located within 10 feet of all workstations
  • Batteries, ink, and toner cartridges are centrally recycled and responsibly disposed
  • Computer monitors are set to turn off after 15 minutes of inactivity
  • Computers are set to turn off after two hours of inactivity and are shut down at the end of the workday
  • Sensors are used in the office to turn off lights after a period of non-movement
  • Web documents, PDFs, and email are used to reduce the amount of printed paper
  • Centralized printers are defaulted to double-sided printing
  • Office heating and air conditioning is centrally controlled, with temperatures set to maximize energy efficiency
  • When possible, refillable water stations are set up at events to reduce waste
  • When possible, bins are used at service events for project supplies that can be recycled
  • Employees and volunteers are asked to use refillable water bottles during the workday and at service events

Other Areas

  • Volunteer Center staff are encouraged to regularly attend sustainability events to ensure compliance with the latest environmental best practices
  • Paint and soil used for community service work at schools are LAUSD-certified; supplies must adhere to occupational safety standards and are reviewed and approved by LAUSD’s Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS).
  • Volunteer event supplies (buckets, rakes, paint sticks, bags, etc.) are reused for multiple events, and supplies with one-time usage are kept minimal
  • The Volunteer Center regularly reviews its Sustainability Policy to ensure alignment with current environmental trends
