Project SPELL End of the Year Recap

June 12th, 2014

During the 2013-2014 academic year, the Student Committee of Project SPELL has worked hard to bring about new changes and improvements to Project SPELL. Our new accomplishments include creating a Tutor Handbook, implementing quarterly tutor retreats, and working diligently to improve training workshops for our tutors!

One of our biggest accomplishments this year was implementing the Tutor Handbook! With the help and support of our Program Director, Amparo Rios, the Student Committee came up with the idea to create a reference book for all of our new tutors so that they would not feel lost in their first quarter in the program. In the handbook, tutors can look up how to create a lesson plan, how to participate in our social events, and how to structure their tutoring sessions. The handbook was an immediate hit with our tutors!

This year Project SPELL held two tutor retreats at the Challenge Course at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, one during winter quarter and one during spring quarter. The tutors participated in leadership and bonding exercises, both on the ground and in the air. Afterwards, the tutors discussed how the skills they learned in each game and activity could be applied in their tutoring sessions. Overall, the Challenge Course proved to be a great place for the tutors support each other while having fun, learning, and overcoming obstacles.

Project SPELL incorporates three workshops every quarter. These workshops help tutors better their teaching skills, increase their knowledge of ESL, and even give them the tools to tackle interviews and resumes in the future after UCLA. However, best of all, the workshops are a chance for all members to come together and foster a community of passionate educators, and it is with great joy that we can announce that attendance has sky rocketed in the past year. Thank you to all members of Project SPELL, and we look forward to a new year of even more fabulous participation and engagement!
