Tutoring + More Opportunities at LA High School

Interested in working with urban high school students? Through its advisory board (Friends of SoHDA [FoS]), the School of History and Dramatic Arts (SoHDA), an LAUSD Pilot school* in Glassell Park, is seeking to expand its volunteer and intern pool. There are opportunities for short and long term positions. SoHDA is an all-public school serving students of the surrounding neighborhood with a college-prep academic program blended with a robust drama and stage tech program. Staffed with a dedicated (group of teachers, community volunteers and interns play a key role in helping bridge the equity gap.

Both volunteer (shortterm or longterm) and internship opportunities available. FoS is also open to internship project proposals. COLLEGE GUIDANCE VOLUNTEERS & INTERNS
Nearly all students at SoHDA will be the first in their families to go to college. Volunteers are needed throughout September, October, and November to work with students on their applications, test preparation, and admission essays. No experience needed–just a willingness to help students work through the application process. All training and materials will be provided. The schedule is flexible M-F during the day & after school. Some Saturday workshops are being planned as well.

TUTORING
M-Th tutoring in all subjects, including English Language Learners.

SCHOOL INTERNS “SCHOOL LEADERSHIP” PROGRAM
SoHDA has a student-run leadership team that works on school events and community outreach. Interns will serve as mentors as they help guide the students to develop planning and teamwork skills.
Hours: Thursday and or Friday 11-1 and other afterschool hours during events.

ELL VOLUNTEERS/MENTORS
Volunteer as mentor/tutors for English Language Learning students during classes and/or during afterschool English language enrichment and tutoring. In addition to mentor/tutors, SoHDA is open to any learning projects that an intern may want to develop for the students.

CLASSROOM INTERN(S)
Get valuable hands-on experience working in a classroom. While flexible with the exact configuration, classroom interns will be expected to make a regular commitment for the sake of planning. Assistance welcome in all subjects. Please specify if you have a specific interest.

THEATER INTERNS
SoHDA has a full Drama and Stage Tech program. Interns will help with all phases of theater production.

Time Details
Volunteers are welcome to help occasionally, for single events, or on a regular basis.
