UCLA honors Veterans in a number of ways each year, and the Volunteer Center wants to honor service members through a variety of service projects throughout the weekend of November 9-12. Please join us at the following community service events.
Please join us for our annual UCLA Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, November 9, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in Wilson Plaza. This event will honor the members of our Bruin family who are veterans of military service—those who have completed their service, those on active duty, those who are training to serve and those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. An information fair, providing resources for veterans, will follow the program.
For more information or to RSVP, please visit: http://www.army.ucla.edu/veterans-day-ceremony-2012 or the Chancellor’s recent email.
Staff Assembly and the Volunteer Center will be hosting Operation Gratitude letter writing. Stop by our table and write a letter thanking a veteran for their service. Stationary, pens, and sample letters will be provided.
In honor of Veterans Day, join fellow UCLA Alumni from the San Fernando Valley to share in “Bruin Spirit” and assemble holiday care packages at Operation Gratitude. Everyone is welcome, including family members, children (ages 12 and up) and friends.
Participants may attend one or both of the following shifts: 9 a.m. – Noon or 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Parking is free; gourmet lunch trucks available from noon to 1:30 p.m. Volunteer Day includes production of the care packages, labeling, letter reading and writing, running packages, re-stocking the lines, breaking down cartons and many other tasks. Both seated and standing jobs are available. Register at the UCLA Alumni website to secure your spot.
Operation Gratitude annually sends 100,000 care packages to individually named U.S. service members deployed in hostile regions, to their children left behind, and to wounded warriors, veterans and first responders. The mission is to lift morale, bring a smile to a service member’s face and express to our Armed Forces the appreciation and support of the American people.
The City of Los Angeles and Volunteer Los Angeles are partnering together for the Veterans’ Day of Service, taking place on a UCLA campus holiday. The service event is located in our neighborhood at the Veterans Home of California – West Los Angeles. In addition to several Veterans’ Day celebrations, the major component of the day will focus on volunteer projects that benefit veterans and their families.
Active Military, Veterans, military family, and civilian volunteers are joining forces to help construct up to six above ground planters, paint interior rooms, and plant flowers around the VA facility. Volunteers should wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing; transportation, granola bars, water, and lunch will be provided. Sign up on the form to save your spot!
