Thanksgiving Volunteer Opportunities

Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks and celebrating the joys of life with those that we treasure the most. Thanksgiving can also be a day to give back to those who may need some help in one way or another. With this goal in mind, several on-campus and nonprofit organizations work to give back to their community in special ways. We’ve gathered a list of service opportunities throughout Greater Los Angeles that will take place at the end of November, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday!

DINNERS/FOOD-RELATED OPPORTUNITIES

The Love Foundation Thanksgiving Dinner

In anticipation of Thanksgiving, the Love Foundation and the Life Choir will provide a Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless population in Greater Los Angeles. The organization will also provide clean clothes and showers for these individuals. Help change someone’s life this holiday season while making your Thanksgiving that much more meaningful.

Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon’s Thanksgiving Meal Giveaway

Join Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, neighbors, family, and friends as they begin the holiday season by giving away Thanksgiving meals in the City of Bell. Volunteers are needed to assist with organizing turkey meals to be passed out to community members in need.

Westside Thanksgiving Dinner and Celebration

Help participate in the 30 year old tradition of serving the community a wonderful free sit down Thanksgiving dinner. We also provide free haircuts, blankets, clothing, hygiene kits, medical services and a resource fair to those who attend. Come join us at this year’s Westside Thanksgiving!

BEAUTIFICATION PROJECTS

Clean Streets LA Challenge – WLA Sawtelle Neighborhood Council Community Beautification

WLA Sawtelle Neighborhood Council is participating in Mayor Garcetti’s Clean Streets LA Challenge, which is focusing on community beautification this year. WLA Sawtelle Neighborhood Council hopes to engage as many people of the community assist in activities such as participating community clean-ups, promoting of the City’s MyLA311 service request program, planting trees, and encouraging neighbors to become involved in the campus community gardens belonging to University High School and Nora Sterry Elementary School.

Nothin’ But Sand Beach Cleanup

Nothin’ But Sand is a fantastic opportunity to show your local beach some love every third Saturday of the month in Santa Monica. It’s simple, fun, and kicks off your weekend with some positive karma. Everyone is welcome, and you’re encouraged to bring your friends—or make some new ones.

RACES AND WALKS THAT GIVE BACK

Help Back on My Feet Combat Homelessness In LA

Back on My Feet Greater Los Angeles is a charity beneficiary of the Lexus LaceUp series. For every volunteer provided by Back on My Feet, Lexus will make a donation that will help them continue their mission to combat homelessness through the power of running, community support, and essential employment and housing resources! This one small act of volunteering to assist during the excitement of race day, can do so much.

United Way’s HomeWalk 2017

United Way of Greater Los Angeles’ HomeWalk is the county’s largest annual event dedicated to ending homelessness. Volunteers are vital to HomeWalk’s success as they make the event easy, well-organized, and fun for its participants.  Over the the past 10 years, participants have raised over $7.6 Million to support our homeless neighbors.  Over 600 volunteers are needed to assist with event check-in, parking, crowd control, route safety, distribution of water and refreshments and cheering on generous walkers/runners. 
Volunteers will receive free parking, food, a HomeWalk Volunteer T-shirt and the satisfaction of knowing they have made a significant difference in their community.

We Run The City 5k/10k Rivalry Race

We Run the City is an annual 5K run/walk & 10K run is a rivalry race between USC and UCLA that supports Special Olympics Southern California, a sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Alumni, faculty, fans, staff, and students of USC and UCLA will compete for bragging rights and the We Run the City trophy. Volunteers are needed to assist with water stations, cheer sections, registration, and medal distribution at the finish line.

XTERRA – Turkey Trot, Topanga

XTERRA Events is in need of volunteers to support their Topanga Turkey Trot. Volunteer shifts include assisting with parking at Topanga Elementary, food distribution for the athletes, and managing the finish line. Midnight Mission – Turkey Trot, Los Angeles

The Midnight Mission offers a path to self-sufficiency to men, women and children who have lost everything. Their emergency services, 12-step philosophy, job training, education and work programs offer a compassionate bridge to productive lives. This Thanksgiving season Midnight Mission is looking for 125 volunteers to assist in specific event management tasks during their Turkey Trot in downtown Los Angeles.
