University High School is located on a historic 24-acre site in West Los Angeles, and a portion of the campus is actually a dedicated California State Historical Site. Uni High has a diverse student population, with students born all over the world and speaking over 40 different languages. Uni also has a strong relationship with UCLA as a TIE-INS school for Bruin employees to send their children to school.
Volunteers will help promote sustainability, nutrition and wellness at Uni High by preparing and planting a fruit tree grove for students in the Health and Environment Small School. With Uni High being a Title I high school, many students are on reduced and free lunch plans. A forgeable food forest will allow them to have access to healthy snacks and learn lessons about nutrition whenever they pass through. UCLA volunteers will also be involved in transplanting a monarch butterfly habitat from Emerson Middle School that is currently being threatened by construction. Uni High students are excited about saving this ecosystem, and having it as a part of their curriculum.
