About Us

Antoinette Mongelli, Executive Director

As the founding Executive Director of the UCLA Volunteer Center, Antoinette Mongelli works with community organizations and volunteer programs in Los Angeles to increase the involvement of the UCLA family and the public in civic engagement. As director of UCLA special events for 12 years, assistant chancellor under three chief executives for almost 10 years, and a VISTA volunteer in Pacoima/San Fernando, Antoinette brings to the Volunteer Center a unique understanding of the university’s work with public constituencies, as well as extensive experience creating new partnerships with community agencies that make a difference in Los Angeles.

David Bloome, Campaign Director

David Bloome has worked as a community organizer on civic engagement projects and emergency preparedness in Southern California for more than 20 years. David directed the UCLA Eco-Heroes Campaign, a project that linked the university with the Los Angeles Unified School District and wilderness agencies to educate K-12 students about natural resources and sustainability. Since 1996, he has made the commitment to participate in one volunteer project a month.

Scott Hutchinson

Scott Hutchinson, a UCLA Design Media Arts alum, brings design, branding and user experience strategies to the Volunteer Center. He works in collaborative environments to integrate, test and deploy social media and interaction designs for the web and other platforms. He is the Program Director of the Visual Arts at UCLA Extension’s Department of the Arts.

Yoh Kawano

Yoh Kawano is the Volunteer IT Guru, leading the way on all technical aspects of the Volunteer Center website. As a member of UCLA’s Academic Technology Services, he manages the collaborations between the Volunteer Center and the many technology participants on and off campus to make this site possible.

Lydia Avila

Lydia Avila is a fourth year Geography/Environmental Studies and Psychology double major who is originally from La Puente, California. She has been volunteering in Latinas Guiding Latinas (LGL) as a mentor for middle school girls since the first quarter of her first year at UCLA.  Lydia is currently LGL’s Executive Director and the Community Programs Office Student Association (CPOSA) Chairperson.

Farhan Banani

Farhan Banani is a fourth year Economics major.  He has been involved with two Community Service Commission (CSC) projects: Project Literacy and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.  Farhan now serves as Community Service Commissioner representing service organizations on the Undergraduate Students Association Council as well as providing resources, training and support for the twenty projects under CSC, and he is humbled to serve and be a part of the Los Angeles Community.

Mark Dakkak

Mark Dakkak is a fourth year undergraduate majoring in Mathematics. For several years he was involved in and eventually led Project Literacy, one of the largest community service groups at UCLA. Mark helped found the Global Health Equity Initiative and is currently a caseworker for the clients of the UCLA Mobile Clinic. Mark hopes to pursue a career that combines social justice and health care.

Eva Leidman

Eva Leidman is a fourth year undergraduate majoring in International Development Studies. She is also the director of the Global Health Committee of the Student Welfare Commission and the Global Health Equity Initiative. Through these organizations and others, Eva has work to promote volunteerism domestically and internationally.

Anthony Nguyen

Anthony Nguyen is a fourth year Biology major.  He is a director of the Asian Pacific Health Corps at UCLA and also serves as External Chair of the Community Programs Office Student Association which oversees 24 student-initiated, student-run organizations working in numerous underserved communities around Los Angeles and beyond.

Alesha Unpingco

Alesha Unpingco is a fourth year undergraduate student majoring in English.  She is the Marketing and Recruitment Director for Project Literacy, and manages the Online Marketing feats of both the USAC Community Service and Cultural Affairs Commission. Alesha utilizes various forms of social media and creative marketing strategies to promote volunteerism throughout the Los Angeles community.
